Poland Seeks Key Transit Role for US Energy Exports in Central, Eastern EU
At a summit of the Three Seas Initiative held in Croatia on Tuesday, Nawrocki emphasized that Warsaw aims to reinforce energy security in the region while simultaneously expanding strategic cooperation with the United States. He described Poland as a potential “northern gateway” for US energy supplies, particularly natural gas destined for neighboring countries.
He stressed the importance of US involvement in the region, stating: “The US is a ‘strategic partner’ for Central Europe,” and underlined Poland’s willingness to play a facilitating role in channeling American energy resources into wider European markets.
The president also pointed to the presence of US Energy Secretary Chris Wright at the gathering as a sign of ongoing strong cooperation between Washington and Warsaw.
Addressing doubts raised in Poland about the reliability of US security commitments to Europe, Nawrocki pushed back against those concerns. He reaffirmed that the United States remains “not only formally a strategic partner of Poland and the Three Seas Initiative but also Poland’s most important ally.”
His comments come in the context of domestic debate triggered by remarks from Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who recently questioned whether the US would fully uphold NATO’s collective defense commitments in the event of a Russian attack on Europe.
Without directly engaging in that dispute, Nawrocki insisted that the US continues to be the cornerstone of security along NATO’s eastern flank and argued that this presence should be further strengthened rather than questioned.
He also highlighted the strategic importance of the Three Seas Initiative for boosting regional economic stability, suggesting that member states should begin exploring the creation of a dedicated investment bank to support long-term infrastructure and development projects.
