Poland Rebuts Russian Allegations of Assassination Plot Role
Brig. Gen. Jarosław Strożyk, commander of Poland's Military Counterintelligence Service, characterized allegations from Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB, as "typical disinformation" crafted for domestic consumption, local media outlets reported.
Russian officials stated Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev, deputy director of Russia's military intelligence organization, the GRU, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in Moscow on Feb. 6 before being transported for medical treatment. The assailant escaped the location.
Authorities subsequently announced a Ukrainian-born Russian national, 66-year-old Lyubomir Korba, was extradited from Dubai and prosecuted for wounding Alexeyev.
The FSB attributed the assault to Ukrainian intelligence, alleging Polish services participated in recruiting the defendant. Russian media further asserted Korba's son, a Polish citizen residing in the southern Polish metropolis of Katowice, assisted in recruiting his father under Polish intelligence coordination.
Addressing Poland's state news agency PAP, Strozyk refuted the accusations, explaining reports of Polish participation in assassinations or sabotage within Russia and Belarus were manufactured to strengthen a narrative portraying Russia and Belarus as facing continuous pressure from NATO and Western nations.
He suggested the allegations may have been partially connected to the recent Warsaw detention of a suspected long-term Russian infiltrator at Poland's Defense Ministry, though emphasized the messaging primarily targeted Russian and Belarusian populations.
Strozyk also condemned the dissemination of the accusations through major international media organizations, characterizing it as "disturbing."
He stated Polish intelligence agencies function within legal parameters and under political supervision from senior government authorities, including the prime minister and the president.
