Poland Claims Starlink Aids Russian Drone Strikes in Ukraine

(MENAFN) Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski accused Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service of “making money on war crimes,” alleging on social media Tuesday that Russian forces are using the system to conduct drone strikes against Ukraine.

According to reports, Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, has reportedly become integrated into Russia’s battlefield capabilities, despite Western sanctions and repeated assurances that the service would not be accessible to Moscow.

“Starlink is making money on war crimes,” Sikorski wrote, claiming that satellite connectivity supporting Russian drone operations is directly linked to attacks on Ukrainian military and civilian targets.

The statement continues a longstanding public dispute between the Polish foreign minister and the US tech entrepreneur over the responsibility of private tech firms in modern warfare and the accountability for how their tools are employed.

Musk has previously dismissed criticism from Sikorski and other European officials. In a widely circulated exchange last year, he referred to Sikorski as “a little man” after the minister questioned Starlink’s strategic role and political influence in the Ukraine conflict.

Starlink has been pivotal to Ukraine’s defense since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, helping maintain connectivity after Russian strikes disrupted much of the nation’s telecommunications networks. Kyiv has credited the service with supporting command, control, and coordination on the battlefield.

However, reports since 2023 suggest that Russian forces may have gained access to Starlink technology, raising concerns over its use in ongoing military operations.
