Poland Seals USD3.8B Defense Agreement with South Korea

(MENAFN) Poland secured a €3.3 billion ($3.8 billion) defense contract with South Korea Monday to co-manufacture precision-guided missiles, marking a strategic shift toward domestic military production capabilities.

Poland's Armament Agency finalized the agreement with a partnership comprising South Korea's Hanwha and Poland's WB Group, media confirmed.

The contract encompasses joint production of over 10,000 CGR-080 medium-range missiles designed for Poland's Homar-K rocket artillery systems, government officials announced.

A combined Polish-South Korean manufacturing plant will be constructed in Gorzow Wielkopolski, located in northwestern Poland, according to the deal's terms.

Missile shipments are projected between 2030 and 2033.

The weaponry will integrate with the Homar-K launcher platform—Poland's customized variant of South Korea's K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system—mounted on domestically manufactured Jelcz military transport vehicles.

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz characterized the agreement as a transformative milestone toward defense sector autonomy. He emphasized that technology transfers, production licenses, and indigenous manufacturing infrastructure would empower Polish engineers as co-developers of sophisticated weapons systems.

"Manufacturing independence is now becoming a reality," he said, a state news agency reported.

High-ranking Polish defense leadership and a special representative of the South Korean president participated in the signing ceremony. Kosiniak-Kamysz indicated both nations intend to transform the Gorzow Wielkopolski facility into a continental distribution center for Chunmoo rocket munitions, servicing additional European nations.

This agreement represents the third substantial defense partnership between Poland and South Korea in recent years. Previous contracts executed in 2022 and 2024 enabled Warsaw to acquire approximately 290 Homar-K launcher modules alongside thousands of precision-guided medium- and long-range missiles.
