Poland’s PM is ready for potential deployment of troops to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that the United States has indicated readiness to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of postwar security guarantees, signaling a potential shift in Washington’s stance.

Speaking at a government meeting following talks among European and Canadian leaders, Tusk said US security assurances for Kyiv after a peace agreement could include “the presence of American troops along the contact line between Ukraine and Russia,” according to a news agency.

“These are fairly unambiguous declarations, appearing for the first time,” Tusk said, adding that it remains to be seen how consistent US partners “on the other side of the Atlantic” will be.

He noted that there are growing signs that the conflict could move toward a resolution in the coming weeks. “There is no doubt that developments have occurred which give grounds for hope that this war can end, and relatively quickly,” Tusk said, while cautioning that such optimism is still far from certain.

Tusk also emphasized that Ukraine may ultimately need to make compromises regarding territory, but stressed that any such decision must be approved by the Ukrainian people. He added that any agreement would have to be tied to “real and reliable security guarantees” for Ukraine once peace is concluded.
